Rock and Brews Cruise & Show | 2/26/2017

Cruisin Orlando organizes some of the best cruises/car shows in Central Florida, and today's cruise at Rock & Brews in Oviedo was no exception.

I arrived at the venue way too early, which allowed me to go to the local Starbucks on Red Bug Road and Tuscawilla in order to get some much-needed caffeine in me. And by the time I pulled into the parking area, there were at least twenty or more show cars there, even though the event did not officially start an hour-plus later.



Actually, it was surprising to see so many folks there considering that the Daytona 500 takes place today.

I was also pleasantly surprised at the nice comments people shared with me. From former to current C3 owners. I always enjoy talking to anyone who wants to share their story and, at the same time, I am willing to share tips about things that I've done to my car and learned along the way.

After lunch at Rock & Brews with friends, I came back home enjoying the beautiful spring-like weather. My Corvette ran beautifully and with temps in the low 70s, it was an amazing drive as well as a cruise.

I cannot wait for the pros at Corvette Masters in Maitland to take care of some of the annoying little things that keep me from enjoying my '76 to the max. And now I am more motivated than ever to have them take care of as many details as possible.

Corvette Masters. Maitland, Florida

I am fortunate to live about 40 minutes from Corvette Masters, a Vette specialist located right here in Central Florida, so after making an appointment the week before to have them inspect my car, I arrived at their facility early Tuesday morning for the inspection.

I was met by George, one of the mechanics, who promptly got my car up on a lift to check things out.

Since I like to be as prepared as possible for these types of appointments, I had a list of all the things I would like addressed while suspecting that the guys at Corvette Masters would add to that list.

That they did!

My original list included things such as fixing the clutch pedal vibration, the annoying shifter rattle, erratic idle, the lack of a working A/C throttle stopper solenoid, door and window rattles, a few oil leaks, installing new dash speakers, and a few others.

George pointed out that the new leaf spring I had purchased almost two years ago was not doing its job since it was pretty flat, something that the local mechanic who installed it failed to mention. Plus the fact that all brake hoses need to be replaced. And, as if that was not enough, he said that the trailing arms need a total rebuild or be replaced.

I knew they were going to be an issue, so I've been doing a little research and have talked with the folks at Vansteel about the exchange trailing arms they offer.

Using or restoring parts that came with the car is not a concern of mine, so I consider it a smarter investment to go with quality reconditioned O.E. trailing arms, and the folks at Vansteel have a stellar reputation for products they sell and services they provide.

They do offer trailing arm rebuilding, but downtime—while they recondition mine—would be an issue, so using readily available O.E. parts saves time and money.

I will ask the guys at Corvette Masters to clean up and detail some of the rear suspension components when the car is apart, but that project may be down the road, as my first order of business is to get the car driving well and rattle free.

My plan to start gathering parts in order to be ready for Robby Hooper and his crew at Corvette Masters to tackle the trailing arms as well as the leaf spring. Since I have to go get a few things from Eckler's this week, I will bring my paperwork as well as a few photos to see if they will warranty the unit they sold me almost two years ago. If that's not an option, I will have to purchase a new one.

As far as the shifter and clutch pedal rattles are concerned, Robby suggested I go to Eckler's Corvette in Titusville and get a reproduction replacement 4-speed shifter assembly, as well as the clutch and brake pedal bushings.

And since the driver's side dash will have to come off for the pedal assembly to be removed for repairs and new bushings, that will be an excellent opportunity to install the new Polk Audio dash speakers I ordered from Crutchfield.

I've said it many times before and it's worth repeating...

These cars are NEVER done!

Precious Metals — Gold and Silver C3 Corvettes

Although my '76 Vette was originally Silver Metallic (paint code 13), the previous owner—at some point years ago—had the car repainted its current shade of red. I debated for a while whether I should have it returned to its original color, but I really like the shade of red he chose so it will remain red ... for now, anyway.

Having said that, I've always liked how C3 Corvettes look in either silver or gold, so here are a few examples I have collected during my web surfing.
